European Study Abroad in the Chemical Sciences!

Would you like to go to Iceland, England, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Austria during Spring term 2026? If so, please come on our study abroad.

We’re now beginning the registration process, and we’d love for you to be part of this incredible experience. Our program is designed to explore some of Europe’s most breathtaking locations while diving into the fascinating world of chemistry—both its historical significance and cutting-edge innovations.

Examples for the trip include:

  • Plitvice Lakes National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site): A stunning natural setting in Croatia where we’ll explore concepts in solution chemistry.
  • Venice: We’ll see this beautiful and unique city in Italy while discussing its historic glass industry.
  • Pula: We’ll see an essentially fully intact Roman coliseum in this Croatian town while learning about some of the chemistry the Romans used.
  • Iceland: We’ll explore the beauties of this country and also visit a biotech company that focuses on the unique, rather homogeneous genetics of the Icelandic people. We’ll also try to see the Northern Lights!
  • Oxford Nanopore Technologies: A visit to this pioneering biotech company in England will give us insight into the design of protein-based machines for DNA sequencing – How nanopore sequencing works. While in England, we’ll also spend a day exploring the spectacular college town of Cambridge.
  • Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle: In Slovenia, we will tour one of the largest caves in Europe, learning about some of its underlying chemistry, and also visit a remarkably well-preserved medieval castle, learning about some chemistry that was practiced in the Middle Ages.
  • Gregor Mendel’s Monastery, the site of the Battle of Austerlitz, and a visit to Tescan: In Brno, Czech Republic, we will visit the monastery where Gregor Mendel did his experiments and formulated his ideas on genetics! We will then visit the site of Napoleon’s greatest victory (the Battle of Austerlitz), which is just outside Brno. We will also get a tour of Tescan, which is one of the largest electron microscope manufacturers in the world.

We’re happy to chat more about the itinerary and answer any questions you may have. If you have questions, please reach out to Dr. Price (jcprice@chem.byu.edu) or Dr. Linford (mrlinford@chem.byu.edu).

Please note that students majoring in a major in our college get a $1000 scholarship from the college for this study abroad!

We’ll be accepting up to 24 students—so we encourage you to apply soon!

Are you interested in joining us? We’d love to have you! The only prerequisite is Chem 101, 105, or an equivalent (or more advanced) class.
